A tru diamond in the rough. Pay no attention to the glossy romance cover for this film–inside is a great little movie. Based on an 1885 novel by Gaetano Carlo Chelli, it stars Dominiqu Sanda (who also appeared in The Conformist and The Garden of the Finzi-Continis). She plays a scheming gold-digger who has her eyes on the prize of the Fiormonti fortune. The money was made by Papa Fiormonti (played by Anthony Quinn), a lousy SOB who in the first scene disowns his three adult children. Sanda marries the most loutish child but is soon having an affair with the rakish one. It’s a great, evil (and oddly sympathetic) performance, and for her role Sanda won the Best Actress award at Cannes in 1976. Even the DVD quality can’t mask a poor transfer, however, as this film still has a grainy quality, but the luster of this Machiavellian tale still shines through. –Keith Simanton

It was a high-stakes operation with a huge payoff. If they succeeded, they would effectively win the war; if they were caught, they were sure to be hanged. This 1956 feature shores up the suspense of the scheme masterfully. We watch, transfixed, as the relentless Confederate train conductor, William Fuller (played by the all-business Jeffrey Hunter) roars through a bevy of Southern stations hot on the heels of his hijacked locomotive. Will James Andrews (Fess Parker), leader of the Raiders, outrun him? History buffs won’t need to keep watching for long, but they’ll want to anyway–the portrayal of the Raiders’ gumption and against-all-odds heroics pushes the basest, most human of audience buttons. It’s not that The Great Locomotive Chase is a simple but well-done film about good vs. evil. Instead, it explores both sides’ motives and draws gentle conclusions about honor, and it does so at an invigoratingly high clip. In that way, it’s a movie worth sharing with kids 8 and older–there’s no blood and only a sprinkling of violence here, but as with all war stories, tragedy plays a prominent role. –Tammy La Gorce

Michael Lerner (looking uncannily like Roger Ebert) is a clumsy eye clinic intern under the sway of his psychic, psychotically vindictive mother (Zelda Rubinstein, the diminutive spiritualist from Poltergeist). “All the eyes in the city will be ours,” Mom commands, declaring war on the orbs of humanity. Hypnotized by swirling spirals and screechy bursts of electronic wails, the dutiful son packs up his surgical tool set and goes out collecting. Suddenly we pull back to find ourselves staring at the nervous reactions of a matinee movie crowd watching our same horror flick (though it’s entitled “Mommy”). The audience watches Lerner carving skulls onscreen (in a darkened movie theater, of all places) while a killer obsessed with the movie unleashes his own rampage on the unsuspecting patrons. Soon it becomes clear that the parallel plots lock together in sinister synchronization. It’s one of the most original uses of the movie-within-a-movie device, and an ingenious avenu for exploring the hypnotic power of cinema. Director Bigas Luna (Jamon Jamon) makes the two killers symbiotic blood brothers, the “real” killer feeding off his cinematic inspiration. It’s often more cerebral than scary, and the home video experience unfortunately robs the film of its final layer (this movie within a movie was really meant to be seen by moviegoers). But it’s smartly designed and stylishly directed, and Luna delivers the horror movie goods–plenty of suspense, buckets of blood, and more gory ocular excavations than eye-obsessed Lucio Fulci managed in his entire career. –Sean Axmaker
