When Warner Bros purchased the rights to the 1959 musical hit GYPSY it was intended to make a purely dramatic film, with songs from the Jule Styne & Stephen Sondheim Broadway score confined to the theatrical sequences. Rosalind Russell was chosen for the starring (but non-musical) role of Mama Rose along side Natalie Wood as Gypsy Rose Lee. However just as this version of GYPSY began filming, THE MUSIC MAN opened in theatres and scored a huge hit. It was then decided that GYPSY should be filmed as a musical follow-up to THE MUSIC MAN. The production closed down and was revamped as a musical. Rosalind Russell could sing but not in the style her role demanded (all of Mama Rose’s songs in the Broadway production were written in the original Mama Rose, Ethel Merman’s vocal style). It was decided to bring in singer Lisa Kirk to assist Russell with the vocals rather than re-cast the role. The end result fully justifies this decision because Rosalind Russell’s Mama Rose is simply magnificent and the combination of Russell and Kirk in the songs is so perfect you never know (or care) who is doing the singing. No other actress, before or since (which includes such illustrious performers as Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury, Bette Midler and Tyne Daly), even comes close to conveying the monster in mother’s clothing that was Mama Rose the way Russell does while still allowing the humanity of the character to emerge now and then only to become subservient once again to her driving ambition.

Natalie Wood is also excellent as Gypsy Rose Lee, who succeeded beyond her mother’s Dreams. Her mother and daughter showdown scene with Russell is riveting. A young, vibrant Ann Jillian gives equally great support as Dainty June, the focus of Mama Rose’s machinations for most of the film, who also went on to become June Havoc, one of the most celebrated stage actresses of her time.

Besides great acting, the songs are performed with a bravura and brilliance that far outclasses all other versions of this musical. In fact the Warner Bros. Studio Orchestra plays this music so magnificently it makes the more recent Bette Midler TV version sound anemic by comparison. The Dolby Digital 5:1 Discrete Surround envelopes you into the proceedings and the sharp, richly saturated Technicolor wide screen image (2:35-1) is fully equal to the superb audio.

But it is Rosalind Russell in one of the greatest screen performances ever committed to film that drives this version of GYPSY to the top of the heap and makes this DVD a “must own.”

Some spend the winter hibernating. I spend it hibernating AND watching musicals. This past winter in the Northeast wasn’t quite as severe as some we’ve seen, but it was LOOOONG. The winter that wouldn’t die. So I needed a goodly supply of classic musicals on hand.

What a treat it was to re-watch GYPSY after lo these umpteen years. Rosalind Russell’s Rose is a study in great force-of-nature type acting. As it happens, hers is the only Rose I’ve ever seen, so I cannot really get into the who-was-better argument with any real authority. But it’s hard to imagine that Merman could have played this archetypical stage monster, uh, mother with more authority on the big screen. My guess is that those who maintain that Russell brings subtlety to the character that Merman could not have are right. Merman may have been great on stage, where bigger is better (voice, manner, gesture and all out pizzazz), but what works wonderfully on stage may be deadly on screen (and vice versa).

Roz was the quintessential tough broad on screen. She projected warmth, as well as street smarts though–and that was the order of the day with the screen version of GYPSY. She’s supported by a wonderful cast: Karl Malden, just great as always, as her big lug/softie of a suitor. And Natalie Wood, fetching as always, as the young, sweet vulnerable Louise.

GYPSY is as good a musical as you’re going to find. Smart, touching, sassy. They don’t make ‘em like that anymore. Well, of course, they don’t really make musicals much anymore, but you know what I mean.

I hope I won’t leave Roz Russell fans crushed when I mention one thing, however. For years, I used to tout Russell’s talk-singing as proof that a talented actor with even moderate vocal ability could always learn to put over a song. Now I learn from imdb.com that the vocals (some? all?) may have been supplied by actress Lisa Kirk. I am shocked–not appalled, but shocked. If those vocals aren’t Roz’s own, well, it’s just about a perfect match. The songs are sung in as gritty a voice as Roz uses in delivering the lines. I have no doubt that Russell could have pulled it off herself, and it may have been the case that some suit at the studio chickened out and brought in Lisa.

Well, it could have been worse. At least they didn’t go against type and drag in Marni Nixon.

PS–Ah yes, it only occurred to me to check a little further to see if there was a soundtrack album on CD to see what the real scoop on the Lisa/Roz business was. It’s true that Lisa was brought in after Roz had already recorded her versions. Since Roz’s outtakes are included on the CD, it’s doubtless enlightening. The reviews (all customer reviews, in this case) are penned by fans in the know, and although no one can agree, they’re well worth taking a look at if you’re at all curious. Purchasing the CD may well be worth it if you’re very curious.

If you’d like to be disgusted, search for the name Chante Mallard. What you’ll find is the story of a drug/alcohol intoxicated woman, who hit a man named Gregory Biggs with her car while she was driving home. After the collision she completed her trip, parked in the garage, and proceeded to callously let Biggs bleed-out (officials believe he would have lived if given medical help) while she had sex with her boyfriend and no doubt did whatever else her morally decayed black heart desired.

Since no audience would appreciate simply seeing a man slowly bleed to death while stuck in a car windshield, the makers of this movie took some liberties with the truth. I’m ecstatic they did.

Thomas Bardo (Stephen Rea) is down on his luck. Evicted, jobless, possession-less, he doesn’t even have a place to sleep. When police wake him from slumber on a park bench, he’s forced to make his way toward a mission.

Meanwhile, Brandi Boski (Mena Suvari - miscast because Mallard is an obese black woman) is a soulless, selfish drug-abuser who is getting trashed and partying the night way. (Suvari really manages to pick out character roles that make me despise her) Many other reviewers may view her as “balanced”, but since she’s a drug-using drunk driver, and is a white girl with corn-rows - which never looks good - I’m going to go ahead and say that she’s incredibly unbalanced and vile.

As if it were a surprise, she’s blitzed out of her mind (thanks to X and alcohol), effing with her cell phone, swerving all over, and she blasts Bardo, mangling his legs and lodging him in the windshield. Drunk or not, people with a shred of humanity stop there and help the man. But not this intellectually, morally, and spiritually defective sociopath. Instead, she goes home and has the least appealing non-rape full-frontal nudity, sex scene in cinema history.

Ahh…the resolution. In real life, as I said before, it’s boring. This movie, however, provides the resolution that Ted Kennedy sees in his nightmares. Brilliant. I won’t ruin it, but the tight directing and believable acting accentuates Bardo’s rage against the dying of the light.

Overall, I recommend this for people with mild tempers and no heart conditions.

COMMENTARY

Knowing the case beforehand, I watched the majority with a snarled lip. Such social apathy really brings out my misanthropy. This single instance serves as a harsh critical analysis representative of the insidious cultural decay that has wreaked havoc on the community, family, and morals of our society. It’s an overtly sexual, me-first MTV-generation where every child is a precious little snowflake, nobody has respect for family, elders, or authorities, and selfishness all but negates personal accountability. People like Mallard are deserving of a special place in hell, and the fact that there is no doubt at least one person with sympathy for her only reflects society’s decay. It’s sad that the movie ending isn’t the real ending, and that vile scum like Mallard are allowed to live, let alone be given the possibility of parole. With any luck (crossing my fingers), karma will make the rest of her life a horror movie.

I was stuck on this B movie from its opening scenes. Inspired by a true story (rather than a sick joke), Stuck is a 2008 black comedy about a Providence nurse, Brandi (Mena Suvari of American Beauty) who, high on cocktails and Ecstasy and while talking on her cellphone, hits a newly homeless guy, Tom (Stephen Rea of The Crying Game), who then remains stuck in the broken windshield of the Brandi’s car for days. While Tom attempts to survive, Nurse Brandi avoids calling the police and refuses to render medical assistance. Instead, she pops more Ecstasy, has sex with her boyfriend, and wonders how the accident might affect her promotion at the retirement home where she works. This is not good, she figures. So instead of saving Tom, she pleads, “Whay are you doing this to me,” and then whacks him with a board whenever he regains consciousness, hoping that he’ll just die already so she can dispose of his body. Re-Animator Stuart Gordon’s satirical film is ultimately about an American culture that has become so self-absorbed that it is easier to refuse assistance to a dying person than to inconvenience oneself. Brandi’s refusal to believe the accident was her fault, instead blaming the homeless guy for the sticky situation, works as priceless comedy. Stuck is rich in sex, drugs, horror, and graphic grindhouse gore.

This is the best transfer I’ve seen to DVD for this amazing film, but there surely is room for improvement. I’m not going to go into details about how awesome this film is, if you are reading this you most likely already know all about it.

What I do want to address is the bit rate of this DVD. It dips really low and some players do not like lower bit rate DVDs. This is why a few reviewers couldn’t get it to play on their systems. In my home theater my main DVD player can balk at low bit rate media. It typically only likes DVD-R for home burned movies as DVD+R gives a lower bit rate. This issue typically only rears its head with consumer burned discs as 99% of studios use top end media with good bit rates. That ISN’T the case with Accent Cinema and Facets Video and this movie.

My Onkyo player plays the movie, but during motion scenes you can literally see the picture break up into major digital macro-blocks, a true sign that the player is getting a low bitrate read. Again, some players just shut down and refuse to play movies with such a bad data rate signal.

To remedy this you can make a 100% uncompressed back-up copy if you have the right software and put it on media like a DVD-R that will give a better bit rate to your player. Use media you know is compatible with your player. Also, most PC DVD drives are more forgiving and you can easily watch this on them using something like VLC player (or your DVD software of choice).

I gave the DVD 3 stars. It would have been 4 if the media wasn’t so lame, but this company should know better. I get the feeling they tested it on PCs, ran a bunch of copies off and never took the time to check the bit rate to see if it dips too low for the common stand alone players out there. It is a shame because I had high hopes for this version with its decent extras and wide screen aspect. Why is it so hard to give this movie the transfer and treatment it deserves?

I am very relieved to say that this new DVD edition allows you to TURN OFF the English subtitles, something that you could not do in the previous DVD. This is one of the very few foreign films I prefer to watch with the dubbed English track (probably because I grew up seeing that way on cable in the 80s). The previous DVD forced you to watch the English subtitles, even with the English language track. The titles and the dubbing did not match, so it was distracting to the point that I could not stand to watch the movie.

The transfer is in anamorphic widescreen (not full screen as in the Amazon description) and looks good, though the print used was not cleaned of nicks and dirt. The sound is monophonic, but clean and about what you would expect for the early 70s. My only complaint is that I had some trouble with the programming on my disc. I had trouble accessing the menu at some times.

I have not yet watched the special features but they include an interview with Rene Laloux, a trailer, a short film (Les Escargots), a music video and a photo gallery. I would like to have seen something more comprehensive, but I am just glad to have a watchable version of the film.

As for the film itself, there is nothing else quite like it.

I really enjoyed this film and enjoyed re-watching it with the commentary by Professor Brian Cox, the scientific consultant for the movie.

Those reviewers who are stating that the science is poor (or even “ridiculous̶ may not have listened to this commentary. There are some errors, which Cox points out, but the overall idea is not impossible, or even so farfetched as to be ‘virtually impossible’.

Professor Cox is a Royal Society University Research Fellow in Particle Physics at the University of Manchester who also works on the ATLAS experiment at CERN in Geneva. In his commentary he mentions discussing with other scientists at CERN about the Q-ball hypotheses and relevance to sun-dying and restarting in the movie. (Incidentally, he seems to believe the existence these super-symetrical (or super-stable) objects will be proven (by CERN) within the next 10 years or so.) His problems with science in the movie tend to be some of the smaller issues (for example - the craft orbiting Mercury a few times, rather than just a ’sling-shot’ use).

His statement on what the penultimate scene means to him (even if it only occurs in a ‘billionth of a second’, or in ‘the mind̵ is wonderful, and really impressed upon me the beauty, wonder, and awe many scientists hold for the universe. I think some reviewers only saw this scene in a literal earth-based perception of time and were put-off by it. Again, it’s not necessarily meant to be seen that way. (And as mentioned earlier, Professor Cox’s comment on its magnificence is inspiring.)

Another criticism reviewers have mentioned was why so many unstable people were picked for these missions. Again, I think these reviewers may have missed something covered briefly in the film itself, and then more in depth in the commentaries. The people picked were stable and generally the very best in their field. Something with gravity, radiation, or another undefined characteristic of the sun caused mental problems . . . this was the reason the second mission included a psychologist, and the reason he was experimenting with the impact of sunlight exposure. I also think the writer was using individuals to highlight various aspects of human nature, but that might just be me.

All that being said, this is not a Star Wars type of film. If that is what you are looking for, you may well be disappointed. On the other hand, it is a bit less obscure in meaning and plot than films like Solaris, and maybe even a bit easier to grasp on the first viewing than 2001, and, for me at least, imparted much of the wonder and awe that those films did.

To anyone choosing to see this film on DVD, I’d recommend watching it, and then watching it again (or at the very least, the last five minutes of it) with Cox’s commentary. In my opinion his comments make a really enjoyable film even better.

Most underrated film of 2007. And potentially the best Blu-ray disc of 2008.

Ground breaking director Danny Boyle has done it again with sci-fi action-adventure film “Sunshine.” It is something you have never seen before. The film takes place in 2057. The sun is dying and mankind faces extinction. The Earth’s last hope lies in the hands of the crew on Icarus II. Attempting to fly to the sun and launch a massive nuclear weapon into it to ignite the fading star. Out of the radio contact with Earth, the mission begins to unravel and they find themselves fighting for their lives and the future of us all.

Fans of other Danny Boyle’s films will not be disappointed. His fantastic films include; 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later, Transpotting, The Beach and Shallow Grave. The films delivers in every aspect. Unfortunately, the advertising campaign wasn’t very strong for this round of Danny Boyle’s film. And “Sunshine” only played in about 4000 screens. I luckily, found this on playing in a theatre near me when it was released in July 2007 and fell in love with it.

Overall “Sunshine” was a great, great, sci-fi film that would be shown to anyone who enjoys a good movie. I wish the advertising campaign would have been better because this is one film that should not be missed.

“Sunshine” uses a 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 which is a great choice for the Fox Classic. This film has great visuals, mainly scenes in outer space. Without giving too much away, the last 20 minutes of the film are amazingly done and the visuals should be nominated for an Academy Award. The transfer to Blu-ray is very well done. When I saw it in the theatre, I was worried about some of the segments of the film because they are darker and could cause the screen to be grainy. But Fox pulled through and did a great job in transferring all the great visuals that I saw in July onto my HD TV at home.

“Sunshine” uses English DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 Surround (48kHz/24-bit) audio format. It is an excellent choice and again, Fox pulled through. The audio on this film alone is Oscar worthy. The films soundtrack, soon to be released, is done by John Murphy in an amazing way. Each scene in this film is memorable with the help to John Murphy’s soundtrack (OST). The Blu-ray transfer is great. The disc also features French Dolby Digital 5.1 and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound which are a little disappointing but didn’t affect the overall outcome of the disc. I would have liked to see the same DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 in the French and Spanish languages. But overall, the audio delivers past my expectations and I still plan on purchasing the “Sunshine” OST when it is released.

“Sunshine” features a new Profile, called Profile 1.1 which is newly released in 2008. The Profile 1.1 allows you to view the film in PiP. The smaller screen being the director commentaries and the main screen being the actual movie. The PiP option allows you to switch back and forth between the screens without pausing the movie. Fortunately, Sony updated their PlayStation 3 to enable this option a few weeks ago. It works beyond imaginable and I really think that this will leave HD-DVD in the dust.

The Blu-ray disc also features an Audio commentary with the Director Danny Boyle which is above par. 21 Video Diaries, all with the Director Introduction. 12 Deleted Scenes and an alternate ending. Two short films: “Dad’s Dead,” and “Mole Hills” which are mediocre. And the theatrical trailer.

The High Definition Exclusive content on this disc are probably the best I have seen on a Blu-ray disc yet. The “Enhanced Viewing Mode” which in the picture-in-picture video commentary are well worth the Blu-ray disc purchase alone (Profile 1.1). It also features a “Surround Sound Mixer” which you can take audio from the movie and listen to it by itself, or take your favorite parts and put them together. A subtitle trivia track, which is loaded will tons and tons of information about the movie, production, and actors. And a search content index. These are probably the best HD and extra conent features that I have seen on a Blu-ray disc and are well worth the price.

“Sunshine” is my favorite movie of 2007 and could possibly be the best Blu-ray Disc of 2007/2008. I can’t believe all the High Definition content on this disc and it is well worth the price. Profile 1.1, also known as “Enhanced Viewing Mode” is a great addition to Blu-ray disc and I believe this is what will bring Blu-ray out in the end (also the fact that blu-ray has Disney). I would highly recommend this Blu-ray disc to ANYONE who ones a Blu-ray disc player. A must buy. If I could rate this any higher I would.

Glenn Beck tells his story of going from a raging alcoholic to a church going Mormon, and of God’s reality and mercy. When I first saw this DVD, I thought, great, just another being led to Jesus story–a whiny self promoting pulpit pounding affair.

I was wrong. Yes, Beck feels strongly about his faith, and, at first, I thought he perhaps was being too hard on Mormons as a people; however, he came through on all fronts. It’s an often turbulent story of rejecting alcohol and finding self respect. My own grandfather had a similar experience, but it was at the end of his life, after he’d lost his wife and family to booze. After the beatings of my father, which he would do in a rage. He, too, finally found the help he needed and died clean and sober, at peace with God.

Beck’s description of his denial, his finding reasons to drink, his constant inability to turn his back on alcohol and coke, his swearing, his profane and brutal treatment of people. “I once fired a person,” he says, choking with emotion, “…for bringing me the wrong pen. I…don’t even know his name.” Finally, the black outs–periods of time in which his body functioned and his brain was asleep–became such of an issue with him family and his work, that he decided enough was enough. With his wife, Tanya, they decided to go on a church shopping tour, and this recounts that experience.

Whether you’re a Mormon or a member of another faith, this account is well worth a place in your library. And if you know anyone in the clutches of alcoholism, this DVD could make a profound difference in their lives.

Unbelievably powerful. I hate to admit that I was in tears more than once as I listened to this very honest, straight from the heart account of the changing of a man’s life. It does not matter what religion you believe in. This is more a story about the changing of a man, his growth, his terrors, and his redemption than it is about his joining the Mormon faith. I recommend it to ALL.

There are very few movies in the history of the cinema that are as perfect as Jean-Pierre Melville’s “Le Samourai”. “Le Samourai” is without question my favorite movie of all-time, and one of the best ever made. It’s a movie that isn’t widely seen, and is never shown on TV, however, it has had a tremendous influence and inspiration for many filmmakers ever since. “Le Samourai” itself was inspired by the film noirs of the 40s and 50s, especially “This Gun for Hire”(1942) which includes a performance by Alan Ladd as a similar loner hired killer character as Alain Delon’s (Jef Costello). I love this movie for too many reasons to mention. First of all, the direction by Melville, the beautifully dark cinematography by Henri Decae, the writing, the editing, etc. Also, the performances are all great especially Alain Delon, who gives the performance of a lifetime, it’s absolutely one of the greatest performances ever captured on film. There are too many beautiful moments in the movie to mention, and I won’t mention them as to not ruin it for anyone who hasn’t seen the movie. One moment in particular is stunning when Delon, who plays a hired killer (Jef Costello), nurses a gun-shot wound to his arm, there’s not a false moment in the entire movie. Another is after he steals a car as he drives he stops for a moment as another car with a woman in it stops next to his car and they both turn briefly to look at each other, it’s done with a subtle, flawless, breathtaking beauty rarely captured on film. I own a VHS copy of “Le Samourai” which I have almost completely worn out, so I hope that Criterion or some merciful DVD company out there produces a quality DVD of this important masterpiece as soon as possible. I would like to think that amongst the “Gladiators”, “Independence Day” and “American Pie” DVDs, they could include a quality DVD of “Le Samourai” for the sake of humble DVD consumers who love great movies. In all, I have to say that I need to watch this movie repeated times so I can enjoy it and be inspired, as well as to remind myself that movies can be important and meaningful. When I see all of the garbage that is shoved out onto movie screens nowadays, it’s downright depressing and sometimes demoralizing, so it’s nice to be able to put on “Le Samourai”, or another great movie of the past, and remember what movies could be and should be!

This superb film is gripping and fascinating from start to finish. Alain Delon is extraordinary…his seemingly cool, blank face has so much pain in the eyes, and his hands ! Watch his hands act ! The expressiveness in them throughout the film is riveting.

I love the way he looks at the bird for clues as to what has transpired in his apartment…this is some of the subtlest and best acting you’ll ever see. It’s a work of art.

The sepia and dark grey tones of the cinematography are exquisite. Everything looks damp, cold, and hard, and the editing is dazzling. This is a brilliant film from every aspect. If you like noir thrillers, don’t miss it.

Without a doubt, Shawn Spencer is the public’s favorite fake fictional psychic detective. Of course as far as I know, he’s also the only one.

But that doesn’t stop the second season of “Psych” from being a rollicking good time, full of crazy schemes and baffling murder mysteries. James Roday and Dulé Hill actually become even more entertaining, with less slapstick and more of a reliance on eccentric plot twists, pop culture references, and crimes that get ever weirder.

Shawn (Roday) and Gus (Hill) get swamped by reality pop culture when American Duos comes to Santa Barbara. The cruel British judge Nigel St. Nigel (Tim Curry) hires them to protect him, because he thinks that someone is trying to kill him.

A live wire and a poisoned sandwich later, Shawn agrees — especially when a drugged-out female judge almost dies. But out of all the people who loathe Nigel, which one tried to kill him? Then the police suspect that Shawn has lost his touch when he announces that someone was killed by a dinosaur, and is confronted by a sexy FTD psychic.

But that isn’t the last or least of Sean and Gus’s problems — a chop shop with secrets, bounty hunters, Gus’s parents accused of Yuletide murder, jockey deaths and fixed races, nanny-related robberies, electrocutions on the catwalk, and going undercover at a telenovela, a school for the gifted, and a retirement community. They even have a run-in with a wealthy, crazy woman that Gus drunkenly married on spring break years ago… and it turns out her new fiancee is a bit shady.

Finally, Shawn and Gus are pursuing one of their weirdest cases ever. First a security guard is suspected of stealing a 3000-year-old mummy — but then it appears that the mummy actually murdered the guard. Can Shawn figure out what is going on — with the mummy murder, the police chief, and his oddly-behaving father?

Although it didn’t break much new ground, the first season of “Psych” was very fresh and entertaining TV. Fortunately creator Steve Franks is sticking to the old adage: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” and the second season doesn’t deviate from what works — there’s still lots of comedy, spoofery, silly dialogue (”It’s spontaneous psychic krav maga!̶ and enjoyable mysteries.

The first episode kicks things off a bit weakly, since the “American Idol” joke gets stretched out too far. Fortunately the mysteries after that get much more solid, deftly juggling even the funny-sounding plot twists (strangulation by mummy bandage? Refrigeration trucks?). You even get an endless parade of pop culture references, from Michael Jackson to “Shaun of the Dead,” James Bond to wikipedia.com. Gotta love that.

But the best aspect of “Psych” continues to be its kooky dialogue. Usually Shawn provides it (”I hunger for the meatballs the way a jackal salivates for an injured possum”), but other characters get to as well (”Hola. Me llamo Inspector Carlton Lassiter. Me gusta queso”).

Shawn and Gus remain an entertaining pair of twentysomething everymen, with Roday continuing to be eccentric, lovably charming and kooky — although Shawn gets quite a shock in the cliffhanger ending. And Hill gets more attention, with Gus pursuing models and faking psychic powers. We even discover a secret past involving sweater vests, spring break, and a drunken wedding — lots of fun.

And the supporting cast remains solid — Corbin Bernsen gets to participate in a couple of the cases as Shawn’s hard-nosed dad, sometimes in loud tropical shirts. Timothy Omundson continues to be entertaining as harder-nosed cop Lassiter. And Maggie Lawson rounds off the cast as the “enigma wrapped in a little blonde riddle” who is Shawn’s love interest, as well as a counterpoint to Lassiter.

The second season of “Psych” continues the eccentric crimes and equally odd crimesolvers, mingling comedy and mystery with only a couple weak spots. Sweet black licorice!

CAUTION: Watching Psych while enjoying milk may cause said milk to come out your nose. Please drink responsibly.

This show is freakin’ hilarious. There are a few sitcoms that have made me laugh, even one hour comedy/dramas that I have found amusing, but I have never watched a television show that has made me laugh as much or as consistently as Psych.

Shawn Spencer is a hyper-observant son of a police detective, who frequently calls in tips to the police hotline to solve crimes. After calling in one too many tips, the police bring him in for questioning. The head detective (”Lassiter a/k/a Lassie̶ thinks that Shawn must be involved in the crimes to have given all the tips. To avoid arrest, Shawn tells the detective he is a psychic and the “spirits” give him the information about the crimes. Thus begins a beautiful relationship between the Chief, Lassie, Shawn and his best friend Gus. Shawn & Gus open “Psych”, their psychic detective agency which leads to all sorts of hijinx.

Thank you to everyone involved in making Psych and USA for airing it, because quite frankly it is the funniest show on tv, hands down. The cast is perfect, the premise interesting and the antics are hilarious! Just remember, avoid projectile milk. Now, who wants some pineapple? Are you a fan of delicious flavor?

Everyone knows the film and loves it, that’s why we’re here checking it out on this page. But what about this DVD package? If you look at the price, you have to question is it really worth it.

When I first read about the Deluxe Edition, I thought the price would be around $50 like most other Deluxe Edition DVDs out there. At $95, this is way too much for what they’re offering. Yes, you get all this:

- a reproduction of Richard Lester s original annotated script

- poster

- 60-page book with rarely seen photographs and production notes from the movie

… but unless they are signed by at least one Beatle, I wouldn’t pay that much. Yes, Richard Lester’s annotated script is great, but wait awhile and you’ll probably find a reproduction online sometime. The lobby cards and poster are great, but those are not the main reasons for the price inflation. The 60 page book would seem to be the main reason for the price hike, but look at other Beatles books out there. The paperback version of The Beatles Anthology has 368 pages, weighs 2.2 pounds, and has over 1,300 photographs. The price? LESS THAN A THIRD of what this Deluxe Edition of Help is going for.

Yes, all these extras are nice, but it’s not worth the price, and I’m a huge Beatles nut who buys everything they make. At this moment, I’m going to buy the regular edition which has been restored with great picture and a 5.1 soundtrack. Plus, the second disk has great extras (could be better if they had Paul or Ringo commenting) that will suffice. Especially for the price.

Drop the price on this Deluxe Edition, guys. If you do that, people will buy.

This was the first Beatles film I saw. From the first minutes of the film I was hooked! I became an instant Beatle fan.

A religious cult is after Ringo because he is in possession of thier sacrificial ring. There are several failed attempts to obtain the ring: stealing it at night as he sleeps, grabbing it when he posts a letter, the elevator scene, getting the ring at a restaurant and even sawing around his drum set so he will fall through to the basement as the Beatles record “You’re Gonna Lose That Girl”. Despite these failures, Clang (Leo McKern), the cult leader, is more determined than ever to get the ring from Ringo!

Ahme (wonderfully played by Eleanor Braun), a priestess of the cult is secretly working with the Beatles to keep them out of harms way.

Added to the mix are two bumbling scientists Professor Foot and Algernon (Victor Spinetti and Roy Kinnear respectively), and a Scotland Yard superintendent played by Patrick Cargill. To Cargill everything is “famous” (the famous Ringo, famous Beatles, famous plan).

John, Paul, George and Ringo are all charming as ever. The settings run from England, to the ski slopes of Austria to the Bahamas.

There are so many funny things in this movie that you can’t just watch it one time and catch them all.

The soundtrack to this movie is awesome: “Help!”, “The Night Before”, “I Need You”, “Another Girl”, “You’re Gonna Lose That Girl”, “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away”, “She’s A Woman” and “Ticket To Ride”.

It’s such a shame that MPI is no longer producing this movie. I truly hope another distributor will be able to gain the rights so it will once again be available.

It is well worth the trouble of hunting a copy of this movie down because everything about it is timeless.

This by far is Kevin Costner’s best film he has been in about 15 years. Costner plays “Mr. Brooks” who leads a double life. On the outside he is a successful businessman and loving family man, on the inside, he struggles with his addiction, his addiction to murder. For about two years he has been able to resist until he listens to his alter ego (played devilishly by William Hurt) to play again. He then goes into the apartment of a couple and proceeds to kill both of them.

The next day he is visited by Mr. Smith, who blackmails him to take him to his next killing. All the while he is being followed by a detective trying to solve the “thumb print murders” and juggles his personal life which is thrust into turmoil. His daughter “drops out of school” and is pregnant, but is that all of it? Soon he discovers she shares the same addiction and sickness as he does and out of compassion “fixes” her situation as well as his own predicament. What to do with and about Mr. Smith? Fulfilling his promise to Mr. Smith he takes him on his next job and decides he wants Mr. Smith to end his suffering and make him disappear, but is this the true end of Mr. brooks?

This one will keep you on your toes, on the edge of your seat and guessing until the end. I haven’t personally seen a film executed this well in many years, by far the best Costner has done in a decade, and I wish he would do more films of this caliber more often. A great script, cast and great performances played deliciously by both Costner and Hurt. This one is not to be missed, and I promise you won’t be disappointed.

The scene is now a film staple; tormented souls in a circle, seated on uncomfortable folding chairs - a 12-step meeting. Earl Brooks, Costner, recently named Portland’s “Man Of The Year,” stands up and announces that he is an addict. Moments later, having wandered away for some coffee, he is confronted by his visible/invisible alter ego Marshall, William Hurt, who says, “You are such a hypocrite, why don’t you just tell them you killed two people last night and it felt great?”

Mr. Brooks is a smart, dressy, psychological crime drama that is well cast, written, and acted. The picture holds your interest by successfully walking the fine line between implausibility and creepiness. Remember Marg Helgenberger, KC in the underappreciated TV show, China Beach? As Mrs. Brooks she seems blissfully disinterested in her husband’s implausibly explained absences. As to Mr. Brooks himself, he models knowledge of tradecraft a world-class assassin would admire, the attention to detail, thoroughness, and commitment to excellence are inspiring. But behind this buttoned-up methodology lurks real passion; after the film’s first murder he’s consumed by waves of euphoria, endorphins flood - the stuff of addiction.

The film’s most interesting dynamic is between the warring angels of Mr. Brooks himself; played out in conversations between Costner and Hurt. Costner has remorse and truly wants to stop, Hurt is all id, gleefully celebrating and encouraging the dark hunger. While these two argue, they are also chummy and good-natured, frequently cracking each other up - after all, they’ve been close friends for a long time. Casting plays a large role is the success of this relationship. Costner, long known for leaving in the hangers when putting on shirts, presents a lacquered façade that works perfectly here, hiding the turmoil within. Hurt, who has adopted “less is more” as his personal mantra, is ideally suited to the task of embodying something less than human but more than marsh gas.

The second act is a little clogged, one backstory too many. The voyeur that witnessed Brooks in action wants to piggyback for kicks. The Detective, Demi Moore, who’s been tracking the “Thumbprint Killer” for years, is going through a nightmarish divorce. Two psychotic killers, sworn to vengeance against her, wander on and off the set. However, divergence makes way for razor sharp convergence in act 3.

The dichotomy torturing Mr. Brooks is ultimately resolved at home. He is a devoted husband and loving father. But what if he has passed along his broken, twisted genes; what would it mean to love and care for a murderer? He sees himself in his daughter; does she see herself in him? In the final scene of this movie, I found myself rooting for Mr. Brooks - despite everything I’d seen him do. That is the truest measure of the picture’s success. A film like this would normally be presented through the eyes of Detective Atwood, Moore, this was much more intriguing. Highly recommended.

Diane Lane plays a believable 40 yr old pre-school teacher, Sarah Nolan, who recently got divorced. She is receiving all kinds of help and suggestions for finding a date from her two sisters, three brothers, widower dad, and even an elderly Aunt. Sarah resists all of their efforts until Sarah’s sister completes an Internet Dating service questionairre on her behalf. She describes Sarah as “voluptuous” and also adds the sentence “must love dogs”. The only photo she has of Sarah is her graduation pic which she places on the site. In the meantime, Sarah is also introduced to the dad of one of her students who is handsome, Italian-looking, and with whom Sarah exchanges compliments. There is obvious chemistry between them but Sarah made a vow which she intends to keep to never to date one of her student’s dads. Yet, she develops a crush on him. The real comedy starts when Sarah answers one of the 18 voice messages she receives on the computer dating service. She agrees to meet with Jake, played by John Cusack. They meet at a park for walking dogs, each of them had “borrowed” a dog for the occasion. The lines they exchange as they check each other out are hilarious … Their first date to an ethnic Armenian restaurant is fabulous and so realistic. The conversation between them is great and memorable. Other amusing moments in the film are when Jake and his lawyer friend are watching “Doctor Zhivago” at home, discussing its merits related to modern dating. Just the fact of two guys viewing Doctor Zhivago … when neither of them has a date is amusing and their rating it as the ideal romantic film is highly ironic.

This film is laughing out loud funny as it mimics real world ironies on many levels for adult dating, whether divorced, single, or widowers, the film works for them all. Many experiences between Sarah and Jake parody real-life and are hugely funny. Sarah and Jake stop seeing each other due to a misunderstanding where a love triangle develops, involving Bob, the pre-school pupil’s dad. After breaking up with Jake, Sarah answers many internet dates, each one is worse than the next. Sarah eventually sleeps with Bob but under false pretext … which she eventually realizes and drops Bob, accusing him of having “used her” when she was vulnerable. He acts innocent of all charges hurled verbally at him. Sarah’s dad inadvertantly meets Jake outside a coffee shop as Jake is taking his hand-made row boat out for the last time .. before it is sold to be mounted on a wall. Jake shares some of his sentiments of lost love with Sarah’s dad - not knowing who he really is. Sarah’s dad quotes Jake to her and Sarah then realizes whom her dad had met … She awakens to the fact Jake truly cares for her and she pursues him. The film is completely satisfying on all levels. It has technical merit, great comedy because it mimics real life so well. The actors and actresses are all perfect for their respective roles. Although this film is comparable to many “formula” films of “boy meets girl”, “they fall in love”, and “they live happily ever after”, the most important aspects of this film are its modern twists and unique differences, making it a summer favorite worth discovering for oneself.

I happened to glance at a few reviews posted here and I must say I’m shocked that they are so ascerbic. What did you expect from a romantic comedy Dr. Zhivago! (If you see the movie you will apreciate my comment). I’ll make it simple for you if you now find yourself at this review and are trying to decide if you should buy or rent this movie. Well I suggest you buy it because as they say once in not enough. Diane Lane will positively blow you away with her charm, grace, style, warmth, and ability to deliver quick staccato peppery dialogue. She is wonderfully appealing and is easily one of the best actresses out there today. Yes cudos go to those around her but it’s the divine Miss Lane who runs away with this one. She has that ability to reach out through the screen and pull you into her life. Calling it acting would be an injustice to her craft. She makes her character a living, breathing, touching life that makes you want to hug her and hold her close and say……I’m sorry that husband of yours ever caused you to cry. You deserve better….you deserve love…..you deserve happiness….hell…..you even deserve a Golden Globe! Run…..don’t walk…..and get it today. It’s a keeper!
