I find it odd that the Bond Blu Rays from the late 70’s and the 90’s picture quality is not as clean as you would expect, but the 60’s and earl 70’s are on point! This film quality is what I would have to call perfect. It has film grain, but yet the detail is high and 3D. This is the way a BD should look. This is perfect. Do not hesitate on this one.

My only complaint is that they did not release a 4th set and I had to buy the 2 new ones seperatley which broke up my collection appearance. I am not sure why this was done, but I don’t like it. I prefereed them individually, but the box set was always cheaper.

THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN opens with Maurice Binder’s gun barrel trademark, accompanied with the “James Bond Theme” this time played on strings, instead of guitar. That was a real innovation by John Barry, which he continued to use for Roger Moore. It was clearly evident Barry was back.

The first camera shot is of a surrealistically exotic locale on a beach where a beautiful girl towels down a tall ark man emerging from the water. The man is Scaramanga, the Man with the Golden Gun. John Barry’s familiar background music accentuates the Epicurean surroundings and the film immediately looks like it has returned to more familiar Bondian territory.

As the film unfolds many of the elements of the original Bond series and missing from LIVE AND LET DIE returned. There also seemed to be a more substantial plot as it initially unfolded. However, there were still undesirable elements that creep into the film as it progresses.

Britt Ekland seemed like she would have been a natural throwback to the sex symbols of the 60s akin to previous Bond Girls such as Ursula Andress, but her vaudevillian interpretation of Mary Goodnight was a fatal flaw. Another flaw was the return of Clifton James as Sheriff J.W. Pepper. Their performances were distractions from the main plot hindering the continuity of the story line.

The film flounders in the middle until it gets back on track when Bond finally travels to Scaramanga’s island for a face to face confrontation. The film follows the Bond formula here. The villain gloats as he gives Bond a tour of his lair and technical wizardry he has acquired. They dine over some dialogue on the merits of good vs. evil and in the end come to the final showdown.

I’ll admit that I always had a soft spot for this film ever since I first saw it. It returned many familiar elements absent from LIVE AND LET DIE. For instance, we see Bond return to the gambling tables via the Casino de Macao. Many fans greeted the return of these elements in a positive response. Other fans still recognized the questionable elements that were still present in THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN and found these deplorable and responded accordingly. To older Bond fans the return of Sheriff J.W. Pepper wasn’t exactly a welcome sight.

An often-overlooked asset to this film is Maud Adams’ performance as Andrea, Scaramanga’s beautiful mistress. She brings genuine compassion to the role as the tormented individual who can not escape her master. Only before each killing does Scaramanga exploit her sexually in ritualistic foreplay to increase his aim on the unfortunate individual he has been contracted for. In one scene Scaramanga cruelly rubs the golden barrel of his pistol against her lips in a symbolically phallic gesture in a moment of triumph after a successful killing. You can see the pain on Andrea’s face and you feel empathy for her. Even though she appears here in the prerequisite sacrificial lamb role, she stands out as one of the best Bond girls of the series.

Christopher Lee’s performance as the enigmatic Scaramanga was refreshingly energetic. He gave the assassin an amiable quality on the surface hiding a darker side beneath the skin.

Roger Moore’s performance was an improvement over his first interpretation of Bond as a foppish and silly dandy. Moore appeared to give Bond a tougher edge in this one even though the script attempted to undo him. Given Roger Moore’s previous performance and his meager screen accomplishments as Bond at that point in the series, the “duel between titans” it was not.

Some of the cinematography was very good. Bond’s solo flight through the uprooted rock formations near Phuket, Thailand to Scaramanga’s island was impressive. In the pre-title sequence there is an excellent camera shot that follows gangster Hood and Nick Nack through an anteroom. As they enter the parlor the camera continues to dolly forward while the lens zooms back giving the viewer an impression of the expanse and opulence of Scaramanga’s domicile, a melding of the man-made with nature’s volcanic rock.

Production designer Peter Murton’s work on this film has always been underrated. Scaramanga’s posh living quarters overlooking his grotto rivaled earlier set designs by Ken Adam. Also very impressive were extraordinary miniatures by Derek Meddings.

One bit of innovation combing location filming, miniatures and set design was the use of the half-submerged Queen Elizabeth, its hull at a 30-degree angle, scorched and rusted at rest in Hong Kong harbor. Hidden in the bowels of the sunken ship is the headquarters for the Hong Kong station of the British Secret Service. “It’s the only place in Hong Kong where you can’t be bugged” says a naval officer to Bond.

John Barry’s scoring gave the film his much-needed familiar sound. Even though it was apparently much loftier, it was still very welcome.

If this were to be the last film in the series it would have been a sad final testament. Luckily greater things were yet to come.

THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN is a bit of a romp gaining cult status in some circles thanks in part to Christopher Lee’s performance. One is able to look back and just enjoy it for what it is. I believe it was one final look, though much out of step to the origins of the series before THE SPY WHO LOVED ME took the Bond series in a new direction.

The complete series box set is a *big* box, not something that will fit easily on a shelf. The box is quite sturdy, with each season’s discs packaged in their own sleeve (four in all). These sleeves are cardboard with flip up covers; inside, the discs are nested in a folded cardboard separator.

Some have claimed that this set would include the movie “Caprica”, but it is *not* included. The 25 DVDs in this set are the same DVDs available in the 6 season sets (1, 2.0, 2.5, 3, 4.0, 4.5).

The series was produced in HD, which means a wide-screen presentation; however, it was deliberately shot with a grainy look to give it a ‘gritty’ film quality.

Why get this collection instead of the six season sets? You get a neat Cylon Centurion figurine (and it’s good sized!), but no booklet, a huge box, and inferior internal packaging. I bought the series this way mainly because it was (slightly) cheaper than purchasing the six season sets individually; nevertheless, I’m experiencing a bit of buyer’s remorse.

What was Universal thinking…

The blu-rays may be alright, but I’ve never seen something that costs so much money packaged so badly. You get this big ungainly box that won’t fit on most shelves, but I’m thinking “hey, I’ll just take the individual season boxes out and store the big outsized box. But then you discover that you get the dvd’s in these cheap cardboard boxes that are in loose sleeves… and there’s no booklet of any kind with it. I could live without the booklet except THERE’S NO EPISODE LIST. ANYWHERE! What if you want to watch a particular episode. You’ll have to remember or guess what disc it’s on… for all four seasons. And there’s no list of extras, either. Are there extras? Where are they? Does anyone know?

I think this is the most negative review I’ve ever written, but I feel like I’ve been suckered. This set costs a lot of money, and to get so cheap on the packaging is just condescending. I’ve have to think long and hard about ever buying another box set from Universal.

This boxed set the best thing I’ve bought from Amazon.com to date. I love the Ocean movies for their star-studded cast, the amazing humour, and the hundreds of other things that make these movies unique. The extras aren’t all that great, but I usually buy movies for the actual movie, not the extras… So if a lack of stunning special features doesn’t bother you, and you don’t have the movies already, you should definitely get this set. Easily worth 5-stars in my book.

It’s awesome to know FUNImation is giving the same treatment to the movies as they are to the TV series. Now, I know a lot of people have been complaining and protesting the decision to get DBZ widescreen. But it’s not the kill of the world. I mean, sometimes the crops don’t accomplish that tremendous of a differance a majority of the time. Besides, it makes the whole viewing experience seem like a movie. Would I have prefered it if FUNImation released the series in fullscreen? Yeah absolutely, but the widescreen doesn’t bother me.

Now, the movies are mammoth. If anyone else got the double-feature release, they would’ve noticed the inner packet has a two-star dragonball on it (the Trunks/Bardock feature has a one-star ball) . The movie also features a preview for the next double-feature release, Tree of Might/Lord Slug, which will probably be released around the same time the Season Six box plot comes out. If that’s the case, I deem we can inquire of 7 steelbook releases from FUNImation. After Tree of Might/Lord Slug, it will probably go with the two Cooler movies naturally. Then I mediate they should release Spruce Android 13/Bojack Unbound together so that device the next release would be the Broly trilogy. This would leave the final installment as Fusion Reborn/Wrath of the Dragon. I’m really looking forward to this.

This dvd is almost required viewing for any dbz fan. Mostly, because if you don’t sight the movie deadzone a lot of the first piece of season4 of dragonball z won’t produce a lot of sense. (They should probably package these two items together IMO.) I found this out the hard plot. Who is garlic Jr? He fought Gohan? Surely not. After all in the first episode of the series Gohan acts like he can barely tie his shoes let alone beat somebody up. But you will fetch out the secret here. (spoiler warning) Gohan “forgot” the whole fight with Garlic Junior. Hmm, how convenient. It fits but in a cheesy procedure. “let’s have Gohan forget so we can cram a whole bunch of extra characters into the storyline and not mess things up” cha ching! Bring in the money! Seriously, if you are thinking of buying season 4 of dbz grasp this as well and set aside yourself the confusion.

Probably the best thing for me about this station is the audio commentary for the first movie. I don’t know why they don’t do this more often. It is piquant to hear the people who mutter the characters(the english ones) talk about the whole slack the scenes process.

Regarding the films themselves I probably liked deadzone the most but both were elegant qualified if a bit short. But why did Garlic Junior bother creating a slow zone in the first position? He is immortal, he doesn’t need to utilize gimmicks to regain. Oh, yes that is also quite convenient.

Disillusioned by the cruelty of the men and the lack of a brand that his christian beliefs yell him will advance to those who are decent Demetrius forsakes his religion and becomes the most successful fighter in Rome. Breaking with the christians Demetrius becomes the lover of Messalina. Sent by Caligula to retrieve the robe Demetrius comes into conflict with Peter (Michael Rennie) who reminds him of how he has abandoned Jesus’s teaching and given himself over to the injurious values of Caligula’s court. He nevertheless gives Christ’s Robe to Demetrius who passes it onto Caligula who in a deranged moment kills a prisoner and tries to raise him from the unimaginative. When he fails Demetrius is sent assist to the arena as a gladiator again. The supporting players are first rate with Michael Rennie repeating his pivotal role of the unexcited and assured Peter from “The Robe”, Barry Jones making wonderful work of what could have been the potentially plain character of Claudius, and especially William Marshall who really excels in his fragment as Glycon, the African gladiator who is converted to christianity and provides Demetrius with a focus and a conscience. The recreation of the deadly Roman sports in the arena in “Demetrius and the Gladiators”, are first rate and really support the action spirited. So well staged are they that at times it really looks like Victor Ragged is actually fighting with valid tigers during the notorious scene here he confronts a group of them in the arena.

The last few years have seen some classic films that have been given relieve their primitive lustre via restoration, including such films as, My Elegant Lady, Vertigo, Lawrence Of Arabia to name impartial a few. The new negative was severely outmoded and turning green when Universal aqquired the entire Paramount film library. Color-correction and shadow detail are now succor to their unusual set, as is the soundtrack featuring Franz Waxman’s handsome salvage.

The ULTIMATE Hitchcock thriller, with more than a touch of romance and comedy.
