Obviously the Disney suits gave more than two figs about the legacy from the first Beast film, as they reassembled the former cast and spent some cash on production and tune-smithing for this straight-to-video effort. The events unfold between the time in the first film where Belle bartered herself to the Beast and her later return to the village to save her father. So the Beast’s heart still hasn’t been melted yet, and he’s susceptible to the inky persuasions of Forte (Tim Curry), a malevolent pipe organ (and former music teacher to the prince). Belle is still trying to win over the Beast and decides that bringing Christmas to the castle will be the way to do it. Please control that gag reflex for this does work remarkably well, and though entirely unnecessary and certainly not a complement to the original, it doesn’t tarnish its good name. –Keith Simanton

Any movie starring Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford has got to be worth seeing, right? That’s as close to a guarantee as this well-meaning thriller ever gets, however, and the talents of Pitt and Ford are absolutely vital in making any sense out of this dramatically muddled scenario. Ostensibly the movie’s about an IRA terrorist (Pitt) who escapes from British troops in Belfast and travels to New York City, where he stays in the home of a seasoned cop (Ford) who has no idea of the terrorist’s tru identity. (Why a veteran cop would host a complete stranger in his home is one of those shaky details you’re better off not thinking about.) But while Pitt’s passionate character waits to make an arms deal for his IRA compatriots back in Ireland, The Devil’s Own conveniently avoids any detailed understanding of the Northern Ireland conflict, focusing instead on the cop’s moral dilemma when he discovers that his young gust is a terrorist. The film is superbly acted, and overall it’s quite worthwhile, but don’t look to it for an abundance of plot logic or an in-depth understanding of Protestant-Catholic tensions in Northern Ireland. (For that, take a look at In the Name of the Father or the underrated historical biopic Michael Collins.) –Jeff Shannon.

See The Forsaken Online Right Now!

Inviting comparison to Kathryn Bigelow’s 1987 cult hit Near Dark, and derivative of The Hitcher and a half-dozen other films, The Forsaken is nevertheless a gritty little B movie that succeeds on its own modest terms. There’s nothing new here, and the film’s vampire folklore is only marginally intriguing, but if you’re attracted to nihilistic tales that unfold in the middle of nowhere, you’ll appreciate this bloody dose of low-budget horror. It all starts when Sean (Kerr Smith) agrees to drive a vintage Mercedes from Los Angeles to Florida, where he’ll deliver the car and attend his sister’s wedding. His troubles begin when he picks up Nick (Brendan Fehr), a nomadic “hunter” on the trail of a small cadre of vampires (a.k.a. “the Forsaken̶ who’ve been spreading their blood-sucking virus since medieval times. Nick’s mission: Stop the virus by killing the vampires on sacred ground, using a rescud victim (Izabella Miko) as telepathic bait (telepathy being one of the movie’s vampiric innovations).

It’s basically a road movie with car chases, nudity, and plenty of grisly violence. It’s not as stylish or witty as Near Dark, but after two decades in the B-movie biz, writer-director J.S. Cardone knows what he’s doing, and while the movie’s never really fresh, it’s also never stupid. The young cast plays it straight (which is good), and Jonathan Schaech is a standout as the lead vampire. It’s anybody’s guss why the vampires manifest themselves as desert-dwelling punks in a rusty Dodge Charger, but hey, sometimes you just gotta go with the (blood) flow. –Jeff Shannon
